Conroe Noon Lions: Club roaring with opportunities to serve this fall
Steve Davis was celebrated as the ‘Lion of the Month’, orchestrating a generous food donation from Cafe105 for the annual ‘kids on the lake’ – fishing tournament. The Lion of the Month is the member who went above and beyond for the service of others. Thanks, Steve, for being that Lion!
A huge thank you to Cantrell Custom Homes with owner Tim Cantrell, who have been supporting the Conroe Noon Lions as a community partner for 19 consecutive years! As Lion Donnie Buckalew reminded us, “We do not serve alone,” and being a community partner adds more reach to our efforts as those funds go into the lives of people in our area.
In 1925 Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf from 18 months old, challenged the Lions Clubs to be the “Knights to the blind, in the crusade against darkness.” Answering that call, the Conroe Noon Lions Club provides vision screening and runs a local eyeglass refurbishing center. At the helm of Vision Screenings Connie Engle reported that in the last month, they have screened 235 3–5-year-olds with 14 of those being referred for further eye evaluation. Just last weekend, at the Sam Houston Elementary Health Fair, 79 individuals were screened providing 23 referrals for additional eye care. Meanwhile, the Eyeglass Recycling Center has also been hard at work, processing 772 lbs. of glasses for local and worldwide needs. Your help with these services has had a big impact. Stop by the center to pitch in or help at the next big vision screening, which will be at the Trunk or Treat from 11–3 on October 31st at the VFW.
Scholarship opportunities are in full swing! High school seniors are encouraged to apply. Check with your career counselors in your schools for the Lions Club Youth Contest Scholarships. Our club alone has 4 separate opportunities and distributes $40,000 in scholarships during the year. There are also opportunities to write, speak, and compete all the way to state level. These deadlines are coming up, so act quickly.
On the heels of all that great club news and opportunities, we were visited by Jake Martinez, Deputy Chief, and Sherry Hunter, Chief Appraiser of the Montgomery County Tax Appraisal District. And while our first response is ugh, property tax, they gave a very informative presentation on why what they do is important and how it protects us. The key takeaways for everyone were to review your valuations, check the MCAD website, review your property details, and then check your exemptions. Mostly, they emphasized, if you have questions, contact them.
If you read all the way to here, then this is your reminder Lions to wear your Amazing Race ‘Color’ to club next week, bring a guest and look for the official route card for your next checkpoint!
The Conroe Noon Lions Club meets on Wednesdays at noon at the Lone Star Convention Center. For more information about the Conroe Noon Lions Club, please visit our website, www.conroenoonlions.org, or call the club office at 936-760-1666.
