Conroe Noon Lions: Club salutes 'Hometown Hero' Sgt. Santiago Trejo for military service

Patriotism and love for our country is an integral part of the Conroe Noon Lions Club. All our club meetings start with the singing of God Bless America followed by the pledge to the United States and Texas flags.

The club has operated a program called “Hometown Hero” for several years.  This program recognizes an active-duty soldier from Conroe and throughout the year the veteran is shown how much he or she is appreciated.  The recognition starts with cards and care packages being sent throughout the year.  In addition, the veteran will be recognized at a regular club meeting.

This year’s “Hometown Hero” is U.S. Army Sergeant Santiago Gabriel “Junior” Trejo. Sgt. Santiago is stationed in Ft. Hood, Texas where he serves his country as a wheel vehicle mechanic.  Lions signed cards to be sent to Gabrial Trejo for his birthday. Additionally, members signed to be sent to all nominees for “Hometown Hero”.

On Halloween, Lions club members conducted free vision screenings for children at the ‘Trunk and Treat’ event at the VFW hall in Conroe. Lions  provided screenings to children as a part of the Lions Club theme of “Driven to Serve.” Vision services are an integral part of the Conroe Noon Lions Club as vision is a global cause of Lions Clubs International.

Community parters are businesses in the Conroe area that support the Conroe Noon Lions Club financially and with assistance.  This week’s Community Partner spotlight Chase Pest Control, special thanks to owner Cary Wortham and his crew.

The Conroe Noon Lions Club is currently in a membership drive titled the ‘Amazing Race’, accenting our ‘Driven to Serve’ motto.  At this past luncheon, there were ten guests.  The goal of the club is to have 60 guests by the end of the race and 12 applications for membership. One of our newer Lions, Corey Harris, gave his reason for becoming a Lion commenting that “the members are amazing and he has found his pride”.

Along those lines of the Amazing Race membership drive, Lions participated in the ‘weekly challenge’ where a blindfolded member had to be led by only voice commands through an obstacle course.  Even during this competition, a Lion found it funny to throw a napkin into the competition.  Fun and comradery can always be found at the Conroe Noon Lions Club.

Our speaker at the club meeting this week was Dr. Sherry Marasse with Soluna Mental Wellness.  Dr. Marasse’s presentation was on narcissism, which is an excessive interest in one’s admiration.  The thought that Dr. Marasse brought home to the members is that healthy narcissism is where a person believes they have value even when not admired, successful or perfect.

The Conroe Noon Lions Club will be celebrating Veteran’s Day at our club meeting that falls on November 11th. Where club members are asked to ‘Invite a Vet’ to lunch, this will be a wonderful opportunity to honor veterans who attend.  The motto of the Conroe Noon Lions club is “Driven to Serve”, but no one comes close to the drive and sacrifice of serving more than our Veterans.

The Conroe Noon Lions Club meets on Wednesdays at noon at the Lone Star Convention Center.  For more information about the Conroe Noon Lions Club, please visit our website, www.conroenoonlions.org, or call the club office at 936-760-1666.
