Basketball coaches visit Conroe Noon Lions for Roundball Round Up
Christie Sproba/ Conroe Noon Lions
December is a busy month for the Conroe Noon Lions Club. It’s the perfect time to bring a new member and help us finish off our membership drive successfully. Last week we recognized the late James Stewart as our patriarch of the week. James was a dedicated member for over 54 years. He served as club president in 1975-76, District Governor in 1986-87, and sponsored 40-plus new members. If you know someone who would make a great Lion like James, they are welcome to join us any Wednesday.
Lions Tracy Irving and Bob Hataway, both agents with State Farm Insurance, were recognized as our Community Partners of the week. A big THANK YOU because our Community Partners make all of our fun events and fundraisers more successful.
Morgan Freeman was on hand last Wednesday with the Conroe Leo Club President Meridith Cox, and Vice President Peyton Perry, to recap their recent coat and blanket drive. The drive was a big success and every Leo Club member in attendance helped distribute the blankets and coats.
One of the most anticipated fundraisers of the year is coming up, the Lucky Derby – Car Raffle. 28 finalists will be drawn on Dec. 6. On December 13th the finalists will vie for a new shiny car courtesy of Buckalew Chevrolet, and 27 other fabulous prizes. Contact our club office to find out if there are any tickets left.
And for those in the holiday spirit, we have plenty of Christmas events on the calendar.
• Lions can sign up now to help the students at Reeves Elementary celebrate the holidays at their annual Jingle Bell Bash on December 15th.
• Donations of full-size toiletry items for Christmas baskets will be collected through December 15th. Sign-ups will begin soon for those wanting to help distribute the baskets on December 20th. A great way to help those in need during the holiday season.
• Our annual Christmas Social will be at the weekly meeting on Wednesday, December 20th. Lions and their spouses are welcome to attend for some great fun, fabulous door prizes, and great entertainment by Tony Mac.
In addition to the holiday season, it is also basketball season. Last week we were privileged to welcome the local high school basketball coaches to give us an update on their programs at our annual Roundball Round Up. Not only do these coaches take time out of their busy schedule to share with us, they are also busy shaping the lives of young men. One of the most touching moments of the day was the joy of College Park Coach Clifton McNeely seeing one of his past students now coaching in the district. Caney Creek coach Mark Kovack played for Coach McNeely at College Park, graduating in 2009. Thank you to Coach Daryl Mason (Conroe), Coach Clifton McNeely (College Park), Coach Dale Reed (The Woodlands), Coach Mark Kovack (Caney Creek), Coach Randy Appiah (Oak Ridge), Coach Mike Day (Grand Oaks), Coach Jake McDonald (Montgomery), Coach Scott Peak (Lake Creek), Coach Jeremy Clark (Willis) and all of their assistant coaches, for all they do to teach and inspire these young athletes.
