May's Big As Texas Festival to bring awareness to mental health, suicide prevention

Mike Medved/ Conroe Noon Lions

Hello from the Greatest Lions Club in the World!  The Conroe Noon Lions Club.  We had another great meeting this past Wednesday.

President Jason Miller began the meeting with our normal opening of pledges and prayer.  Lion Gail Cain made sure all the February birthdays were roasted to a vibrant rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ which was followed by our ‘Smile Song’.  We welcomed our guests and lucky Lion Charlie Irvine was the big winner of this week’s door prize thanks to Lion Amanada Anders. Our community partners this week were Woodforest Wealth Strategies and Woodforest National Bank.  Special thanks to Lions Steve Wohlschlaeger, Audrey Winkle, and everyone at Woodforest.
We are a very busy club in February.  A few of the events this month are the upcoming annual Dinner/Dance & Auction on February 15th, Service Saturday on February 17th at the VFW 4709, and the Blood Drive on February 28th from 10 to 4.  Donors will receive a Rodeo t-shirt and a bowl of chili, so be sure to donate.

Vice Presidents Bryan Rennell and Tracy Irvine gave out some mid-year awards.  Those recognized were Christmas Basket Chair Karon Gordy, 3rd Chair Junette Mihelich and Christmas Social Chair Susan Johnson, Assistant Chair Jessica Steinmann, Drug Awareness Speech Chair Hannah Medley and Asst. Chair Byron Stewart, Diabetic Essay Contest Chair Kim Perry, Asst. Chair Christa Townes and Pre-School Vision Screening Chair Connie Engle, Asst Chair Ingle Merle.  Congratulations all for the great work!

Lion Mike Sproba introduced our guest speaker, Trey Diller.  Trey was a star football player who graduated from College Park High School.  He played college football at Wofford College as well as Sam Houston State and for the NFL with the Carolina Panthers.  He now puts on different events, approximately 70 so far.  Trey spoke about a huge concert event coming to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds called BIG AS TEXAS Music and Food Festival.  So far they have sold tickets to people in 3 countries and 28 states.  Some of the stars appearing are Thomas Rhett, Clay Walker, Dierks Bentley, Billy Strings and so many more.  This 3-day event will be held on May 10th, 11th, and 12th.  There will be two stages each day.  BIG AS TEXAS is coming to Montgomery County to raise awareness for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.

In case you didn’t know Montgomery County has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.  There are several groups of nonprofits groups to benefit from this event. Besides the Music there will be plenty of food, not just brisket but some exotic meats from local restaurants.  To get information and tickets visit their website, BIGASTEXASFEAST.com.  Their goal is to have 30,000 people attend the event.  Let’s all come and enjoy this event in our own backyard.

All Lions remember this Wednesday will not be a regular meeting it is our Work-Day for the DD&A, we’ll meet at 10am and will be working to change the convention center into a beach paradise.  There’s lots to do, set-up, decorations, and auction items.  But don’t worry there will be pizza served.
