Conroe Noon Lions: Club members put 'We Serve' motto into action with community service
For nearly 90 years, the Conroe Noon Lions Club has been improving lives in the local community and beyond through service and leadership. From collecting, repairing and distributing eyeglasses to providing vision screenings, supporting local neighbors and serving at Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, the club continues to put its motto, “We Serve,” into action.
This week’s guest speaker, Terry Weaver, director and producer of The Beast of Trinity and award-winning actor in The Breaking Strongholds, reminded Lions that stories matter. An actor, author, Texas Aggie, husband and father, Weaver has built his life around storytelling because, as he shared, “stories can travel.” Through stories, lives can be changed. He recalled how his own life was impacted during the Iraq War by the evening stories of his friend, “Muffin Man,” which helped him sleep at night in the midst of chaos. His message served as a reminder that each of us can have an impact on another person’s story.
It is always a great day at the Club when there is a badge exchange. More Lions on the street means more people being served, resulting in a greater impact on the Conroe area. At this week’s meeting, President Sharene Carr had the honor of presenting the official blue badge to new member Lion Manoucheka Manners who is already making a difference in the community through service.
A new opportunity for service was announced by 1st Vice President Andrew Perry. Men are invited to gather at the Eyeglass Recycling Center on Thursdays from 7-9 a.m. for donuts, coffee and a few big fish stories during the newly launched “Men’s Morning at the Eye Center.” Volunteers will bond over sorting, cleaning, categorizing and tagging donated used eyeglasses in preparation for shipment to people in need around the world.
For those who are looking for weekend volunteer opportunities, Lion Madi Perry called for more hands to help with this month’s Service Saturday Project. Lions will assist teachers with classroom preparation and decorating at Reeves Elementary School on August 15. Everyone is hoping to earn an A+ on that assignment.
This year marks the 20th year of the club’s Community Partners program. Beginning with 80 participants in its first year, the program has grown to 145 partnerships, with room for even more. The generosity of these local businesses, leaders and individuals is instrumental in helping the club continue its mission and expand projects that reach more people. Behind every pair of glasses prepared, every student supported and every neighbor served is a partnership that helps make the work possible. These partners help positively impact the stories of those who we help. Ready to make a difference? Become a Community Partner. Together we can broaden the scope of the lives that are impacted.
